Host a Life Skills Picnic in Benton

BENTON, Pennsylvania — Life skills students from across Columbia County flocked to Benton Community Park for an end-of-school picnic.

“We have the Southern Columbia School District, the Benton School District, the Millville School District, the Northwest School District and the Berwick School District,” said Special Education Director Mary Rose Latorre.

“They’re all in high school, some in middle school, so they’re in grades 7 through 12,” said Chloe Fartz, a special education teacher.

There was music, face painting, balloon animals, and more. The kids also had time to shoot hoops and play in the park. All the students were smiling.

“It’s fun, I love school, it’s great,” said Kayla Winter of Benton.

“It’s kind of cool,” said Millville resident Van Soltis.

The annual picnic, usually held in Millville, was moved to Benton this year. Organizers say it’s a way to give kids a sense of end-of-school release.

“It’s a lot of fun to take the kids out. We have a lot of food, children’s games and music,” Latorre added.

“I think it’s great that they can talk to each other and feel welcome,” said Fartz.

Ninth grade Kayla Winter loves her annual picnic. She was looking forward to seeing her friends.

“It’s very good. I’m happy,” Winter said.

Organizers say the picnic will be held again next year.
