SUPERIOR — The Superior Post Office will host its annual Letter Carrier Stamp Out Hanger Food Drive on Saturday, May 13th. This year marks his 31st anniversary of the donation drive.
Residents can bag non-perishable food donations and leave them in the mailbox by 9am on the day of the food drive for volunteers to pick them up. Food will be distributed to the Salvation Army, Faith United Methodist Church, and Northwest Wisconsin Community Service Agency food pantries.
“The timing of our food drives is extremely important,” said Lynette Erickson of Superior Letter Carriers in a news release. By spring, many pantries are depleted, and we enter the summer when supplies are scarce, at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are unavailable to children in need.”
Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, letter delivery drives provided the Faith United Methodist Church’s food pantry with about three months’ worth of food, according to co-coordinator Linda Berg.
“It helps communities work together to give to our community,” she said.
The need for the church’s pantry has skyrocketed, Berg and co-coordinator Don Johnson said.By early April, it was serving an average of 45 households a week. Over the past four weeks, they have averaged over 70 family visits in his week.
“It has gone up significantly in the last few weeks,” Johnson said.
Erickson provided a list of the most needed items. It included peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, canned tuna, spaghetti sauce, cereal, pancake mix, syrup, rice, pasta, and soup. , she said.
Johnson encouraged people to check the expiration date before donating items.
“You can use the food, but it’s not just an opportunity to clean the cupboard,” he said.
In addition to donations, volunteers are needed to help collect, weigh and sort food during the drive. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Erickson at the Senior Post Office (715-394-7209) or contact one of the three organizations he receives food from. The Faith United Methodist Church can be reached at Berg at 218-343-8544.
