As I don’t have a lot of free time, I’m continuing my quest and checking out Soul Survivors, which is now available in Early Access. It may be different (now there are many) kinda like a vampire survivor, but that’s not a bad thing at all. In fact, I rather enjoy Soul Survivor. I got the key from Stride’s PR. My first impression here is that it’s really fun.
Works out of the box with Proton 8 and Proton 7 on Desktop Linux and Steam Deck.
It has all the basics of these popular horde games, but with a few key differences. It’s definitely perfect many It’s more skill-based than the basic dodging moves found in Vampire Survivors, and different classes in particular are actually very different to play. The current version has a fairly standard mid-range fighter, plus a necromancer that picks up piles of flesh and spawns creatures that stay alive. There is also a flail. Necromancers were a lot of fun to play with spiked flails brandishing while the skeletons ran around doing their bidding while firing various spells.

Enemies also act differently. There are regular hordes chasing you, enemies pouncing on you, enemies teleporting around you, and vines holding you in place, requiring you to quickly press the directional button to escape.
Lots of neat little changes that make it worth playing. Check out the trailer:
Then come to the boss system, each map has a specific set of bosses, and when you defeat them, the game suddenly warps into what is called cursed mode, where every minute a new curse on you or the world becomes more difficult. Once you’ve completed a map, it’s very interesting and desperate to keep it going for a long time. So while the boss-based maps have gate progression, each map is endless and repeatable, and the end is very dynamic.
Another fun little addition is the money snail you chase. This drops a lot of gold for permanent character upgrades.

There are also temporary items that can be picked up as you progress through the levels. Some require you to keep throwing bombs for a few seconds, while others make the necromancer’s flail huge. Lots of little things that add up to a really enjoyable experience.
“Since we started developing Soul Survivors, we have worked tirelessly to create a unique and entertaining time survival roguelite,” said Sterling Selover of Stingbot Games. Combat, constant progression, and dark fantasy worldbuilding have something for everyone. ”
