Yuji Kaku’s Hell’s Paradise manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ from January 2018 to January 2021, producing 13 volumes worth of content. The dark fantasy series takes place in Japan’s Edo Period and follows a runaway ninja named Gabimaru. Sentenced to death, he is given a chance to receive a full pardon if he can find the elixir of life that is rumored to be found on a mysterious and deadly island. However, Gabimaru is only one of many dangerous criminals sent on the quest, and all the convicts are overseen by a family of skillful samurai — the Yamada.

Hell’s Paradise quickly garnered a massive following upon its release, and the manga series now stands alongside Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man as a member of the shonen genre’s Dark Trio. Sagiri, in particular, has greatly resonated with fans, and she is considered by many to be one of the story’s best characters. Her wide appeal appears rooted in her deep characterization that balances strength and vulnerability. Comparisons between Sagiri and Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Nobara Kugisaki are frequently made since both female warriors have become modern feminist icons in the anime community for how they challenge problematic gender stereotypes.

The anime adaptation of Hell’s Paradise by MAPPA — the iconic studio that also animated Jujutsu Kaisen — premiered earlier this year as part of the Spring 2023 lineup, becoming a smash hit. The show stars Yumiri Hanamori (Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town) and Chiaki Kobayashi (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) as Sagiri and Gabimaru, respectively.

A second season of Hell’s Paradise has been greenlit; the exciting news was revealed in a trailer that spotlights notable moments from the first season. At the time of writing, the official debut window for Season 2 of the show has not been announced.

Kaku’s Hell’s Paradise manga is distributed in North America by VIZ Media, while the anime series by studio MAPPA is available to stream in both the English dubbed and subtitled versions on Crunchyroll.
