Yo-Yo Ma cancels Thursday night SPAC appearance due to COVID

Acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma has canceled his Thursday night appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs due to illness after testing positive for COVID-19, SPAC announced Wednesday afternoon.

Ma was expected to perform Dvořák’s cello concert with the orchestra. Pianist Emanuel Ax will replace Ma and perform both Mozart’s Piano Concerto in G Major, K. 453 and Prokofiev Symphony No. 5.

“We were all very hopeful and encouraged that he would be well enough to join us on our stage,” said the statement released by Elizabeth Sobol, SPAC president and CEO. “Alas, we just learned this morning that he is still not feeling well enough to perform and must cancel his engagement.”

He had canceled his appearance at Tanglewood last Saturday after testing positive.
